What’s the word? by: Gwen Bloomsburg Although Andy Warhol said it about human beings, perhaps we can now adapt it to language: “In the future, every word will be world famous for 15 minutes:” This may very well be the case with selfie, chosen by Oxford Dictionaries as Word of the Year 2013. Most people probably recognize the word, or at least the type of self-portraiture (usually taken via smartphone) to which it refers. Designation of a particular term as word of the year by Oxford Dictionaries is not based on status as a neologism but can be recognition of a spike in usage and prominence. Selfie itself has been around for a decade but had a very big 2013. What cultural conclusions may be drawn from selfie, then? Perhaps people are more self-obsessed than ever, or else we seek to escape our solitude by sharing ourselves, or at least our selfies, with others. In contrast, Dictionary.com deemed privacy the word of the year, in recognition of spying scandals and debates over social media sites using our data (and some of those selfies?) for their own ends. Without a doubt, many who embraced selfies in 2013 wish they had opted for privacy instead. Which impulse will have sway in 2014 remains to be seen, but if the appropriation of Warhol is apt, the clock is already ticking on both words.
